our clubhouse was in the hayloft of the old barn
hot and stuffy in summer
freezing cold in winter
we listened to Beatle records over and over again
on a dusty turntable

rockport 1

after a long week of gray and gloom
Saturday morning, we awoke to bright sunshine and clear blue skies
so we hopped in the car and headed out to wander the trails at Halibut Point

as we got closer to Rockport, the sky turned dark and the snow started coming down
little did we know that Cape Ann would be the ONLY spot in Massachusetts to be in a snowstorm that day.

Despite the fact that we were unprepared
no boots, hats or warm gloves,
it was pretty magical.

We found refuge in a coffee shop on Bearskin Neck
where we dried off and warmed up over cappuccino,
the caffeine fix was just enough to get us back out the door to join the busy Christmas shoppers on the streets.

“Life is so full of unpredictable beauty and strange surprises. Sometimes that beauty is too much for me to handle. Do you know that feeling? When something is just too beautiful? When someone says something or writes something or plays something that moves you to the point of tears, maybe even changes you.”
~ Mark Oliver Everett

the witch house

DSC_0626

in 1692, Sarah Clayes was convicted of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials
both her sisters had been accused as well and were hung for their crime
but she somehow managed to escape from prison and along with her husband, Peter,
traveled by foot all the way down the Old Connecticut Path from Ipswich to Framingham
where they eventually built this home in 1693.

Before the Civil War, this house was thought to have been a stop along the underground railroad.
It contained secret compartments and passageways linking the house to the various barns on the property.

Last week, my son and I went exploring this property
and were sad to find it in such bad shape
I really wanted to climb inside to see the interior
but the floor boards were rotted and I could see right down
to the dirt basement in many areas
Apparently, a group in the town is trying to raise funds to restore Sarah’s house
and turn it into a private museum
I would love to see this happen

there is a Facebook Page that contains more info and some intriguing photos of earlier times

Have a look

Fascinating stuff!

“The mountain stood there to be pointed at.
Pasture ran up the side a little way,
And then there was a wall of trees with trunks;
After that only tops of trees, and cliffs
Imperfectly concealed among the leaves.”
