quiet morning

..into autumn

“Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter’s deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world’s oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.”

  1. Hmmm. I think you’re right, Susan! Your photos give a beautiful presentation of my favorite time of fall, ‘early’ fall. And the light! Oh, my gosh! Is there anything that beats the light this time of year?

  2. First I have to tell that the quote is so well written and thought provoking…I love good words…and how smart of you to find it and save it for the perfect moment…I’m going to copy it….K.
You find the light so beautifully everyday…I’m studying you..LOL…my two favorites, the bike and ding, ding, ding…number one…the table with the little pumpkins…your work is so inspiring…

    1. I’m so glad you liked that quote, I like it too and in fact I used it last fall here as well..and will probably use it every year! Please do copy it! You are so nice to me, Cheryl and please know that I study your work as well and find it very inspiring! 🙂

  3. Your photos are always very heartwarming Susan! I love how you capture the window light and the warm feeling…so homey and comfortable. Wishing you a beautiful and happy Autumn season!!

  4. Another perfect pairing of quote and photos. I’m really taken with the one of the squash on the table, you’d never know what decade, or century, that image belonged to…lovely 🙂

  5. I love your early fall shots…and hope for many more, with the warm colors and light that just caresses nature. I saw ONE red leaf here this week…and there’s an ever so slight change in the air, but we still have summer.

  6. Susan, your work, these photos, leave me feeling inspired to do better … and to be honest, a bit envious of your talent. That table with pumpkins, chair, and incredible light is just an incredible image.
